Immersion in a startup

Hi! Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Arnaud, I’m 32, and I have been working in the public sector for several years. Like many people, a famous virus made me realize that it was time for me to start something new if I didn’t want to regret it later. I thus joined an intensive training in data analysis (it’s the future, they say). This went pretty well, and to complete that training, a good friend of mine suggested that I join him as an intern in a startup. That’s how I joined Wequity for a short internship of three weeks.

As I said, I’m a public agent, which usually means working in huge structures with strict hierarchy and the weight of old habits (which can also apply to old private companies I guess). We could talk a lot about the many clichés attached to these two worlds, but that would take too much of our time, and we would need a bar. Still, joining a young startup was a kind of “mild shock”. For instance, it’s the first time in my life that I was among the oldest workers and not the youngest (I knew it would happen once, but probably not so early).

Working in a young and small structure is very different from what I was used to. None of the old habits, the ones that are very difficult to get rid of (“because we’ve always done that”), even when they have been obsolete for a very long time, exist here. This is obviously a risk every company faces at some point, and I hope Wequity will be able to tackle it. Because we’re not so many yet and because hierarchy is not so visible, everyone has a say and things go fast. Everyone seems so focused and motivated by the project, no one has had time (yet ?) to be disappointed. Also, there’s no scary and inaccessible boss far away, up in the sky, who will ultimately approve things in two or three weeks if we’re lucky. At first, I couldn’t really say who was an intern here and who were the co-founders. That’s quite refreshing. I also had a good time building IKEA furniture for the new “Brooklyn style” offices. This looks like the “startup experience”.

I was very lucky to work on something I like (data analysis) with the programming language of my choice. I was given enough freedom to enjoy doing what I did, but also enough structure not to be lost, which I think is pretty uncommon.

Now, this unexpected experience gives me new perspectives, and I’ll never regret it. Anyway, if you’re interested in data and share the goals and values of Wequity, I encourage you to apply and meet them!
